What is the Norwegian Foot March?
The Norwegian Foot March at the University of Southern Indiana is a 18.6 mile (30 K) Ruck March while carrying a 25 lb Rucksack. This event is rigorous and test competitors both mentally and physically. Those who complete the march within the time frame for their age and equipment standards will earn the right to wear the Norwegian Foot March Badge on their United States Army Service Uniform.
What are the types of Norwegian Foot March Badges?
Bronze, Silver and Gold pins are awarded depending on the number of times a participant has successfully completed Norwegian Foot March. Documentation supporting number of times you have successfully completed the march should be brought with you to the event as proof of prior completion and consideration for higher awards
Bronze: Awarded to Participants completing the event 1-3 times.
Silver: Awarded to Participants completing the event 4-6 times.
Gold: Awarded to Participants completing the event 6 or more times.
What is the Army Regulation (AR) to wear the Norwegian Foot March Badge on Military Uniforms?
The Norwegian Foot March Badge is listed in Chapter 9, Appendix D of AR 600-8-22 as of 30 March 2018 as approved for wear. The University of Southern Indiana ROTC will provide the Certificate, Pin and initiate the DA form 4187 for Military Service Members. It is your responsibility to gain approval from your commander for the authorization for awarding and wearing the Norwegian Foot March pin on your military service uniform.
Rules and Registration:
Date: Date of the Event is November 3, 2018.
Location: Location of the Event is at the campus of the University of Southern Indiana.
Cost: Cost of the Event is $45 for an open participant and $25 for a Cadet.
Limit of Participants: The 2018 Event will be for the first 500 participants that register on a first come first serve basis.
Refunds: NO REFUNDS WILL BE PROVIDED AFTER PARTICIPANTS REGISTER FOR THE EVENT.
Substitutions will be allowed for registered participants who cannot attend. Substitutions must be coordinated no later than October 15, 2018 if the participant expects to have their Norwegian Foot March pin and certificate presented at the event.
Rucksack and weight: Each individual is required to carry a military issued rucksack with frame. The Norwegian guidelines state that the Rucksack and a Rifle together shall weigh a total of 11 kg (24.244 lbs). To compensate for the lack of a rifle, the Norwegian Foot March at the University of Southern Indiana will require a 25 lbs Rucksack to account for the total 11kg weight requirement. The 25 pounds can be anything except: water, sand, rocks or any other items that can be replenished along the route. Each rucksack will be inspected and weighed prior to starting the march and again at the finish line as the participants complete the march. You are encouraged to fill your packs with can goods and other items needed for homeless veterans. At the finish line, after the weigh in, unload your packs and donated the items to the veterans homeless shelter in Evansville, Ind.
Uniform: All Participants (Military or Civilian) will wear ACU or BDU. Non standard T-shirts may be worn in place of the regulation T-shirts (Under Armor, for example) as long as it is of the same color. Distinctive unit T-shirts are authorized and is encouraged for unit esprit de corps for wear underneath the ACU/BDU coat.
Reflector belt is required to be worn by each participant during the entire march.
Footwear is limited to Army authorized boots. (NO Hi-Tec or similar civilian style boots)
ACU/ BDU soft cap will be worn during the march.
Extra Equipment: A Load bearing Vest or Load carrying equipment with at least pistol belt, suspenders, two ammo pouches and two one quart canteens are NOT required but may be worn. Hydration packs (Camelbacks) are authorized during the march. Walking or hiking sticks of any kind are NOT authorized.
Course Route, Length and Conditions: The course shall be 30 km (18.6 miles), on good roads, which are

Course Time: Gender, age and finishing time. Participants must complete the distance requirement (30 km) within the allotted time mentioned below to be awarded the Norwegian Road March badge.
Males: Age 01-34: Max Time of 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Age 35-42: Max Time of 4 hours and 35 minutes.
Age 43-49: Max Time of 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Age 50-54: Max Time of 4 hours and 50 minutes.
Age 55-59: Max Time of 5 hours.
Age 60 or more: Max Time of 5 hours and 15 minutes.
Women: Age 01-34: Max Time of 5 hours and 15 minutes.
Age 35-42: Max Time of 5 hours and 25 minutes.
Age 43-49: Max Time of 5 hours and 30 minutes.
Age 50-54: Max Time of 5 hours and 40 minutes.
Age 55-59: Max Time of 5 hours and 50 minutes.
Age 60 or more: Max Time of 6 hours.
Weather: The Norwegian guidelines state that participants are only supposed to run the course between 0 and 25 degrees Celsius (32 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit). The average low and high temperatures at the University of Southern Indiana in November run from lows of 35 degrees Fahrenheit to the highs of 63 degrees Fahrenheit (35 F – 63 F).

Safety: A water point and checkpoint located every 3 miles of the route. In case of an injury during the march, report to a checkpoint. Roving patrols with medics, local law enforcement and state law enforcement are available on the route.
